ALS, 1833 August 27 : Washington, to Collector of Customs, New Haven, Connecticut.

Duane writes to say that some officers in the Revenue service "have permitted themselves to indulge in intemperate habits," and he calls for a termination to such practices. As Secretary of the Treasury under Jackson, Duane was removed this year on Jackson's order for refusing to withdraw government deposits from the U.S. Bank before meeting of the U.S. Congress.

Duane, son of William Duane (1760-1835), worked at the Aurora general advertiser in Philadelphia, practiced law (from 1815) and later served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1833).
